SCIENCE FUN

I have some science projects lined up to share, but the boys have been wanting to do these projects that we've seen around the blog and they are most important right?!

We finally got the main things we needed for these 2 activities

First up is the gas filling balloon.

Gather the supplies (shown above) and get started!

First we poured some white vinegar into our plastic bottles. We didn't use exact measurements (we live dangerously that way) but used the amount shown on the right. This is a 16fl oz bottle for reference.

Then put in some water to make the liquid level a bit higher without needed to use more vinegar (we want to save some vinegar for other projects)! Then dry your funnel well.

Next, you'll put some baking soda into your balloon using the funnel.

The boys helped the baking soda through the funnel using a toothpick.

Next attach the balloon to the top of the bottle making sure not to dump in the baking soda quite yet.

Lift up the balloon and let the baking soda fall into the vinegar/water.

When the baking soda and vinegar mix an acid-base reaction occurs and carbon dioxide is formed and fills up the balloon!

Bubbly, fizzy, and balloons - this project was a thumbs up from my boys!

Next they've been wanting to make their own hover crafts since I posted the link so since we had balloons and the correct bottle top we decided to make them.

You'll need a balloon, a pop top bottle top, an old/unused cd, and adhesive of your choice. I chose hot glue since I have impatient little boys who wouldn't want to wait for superglue or craft glue to dry.

You just glue the top over the hole in the cd.

Blow up your balloon

and with the pop top closed, and while holding your balloon closed, stretch the balloon over the pop top.

When you're ready, open the pop top and see what happens

My boys said "It's just like air hockey!" Yep - just like air hockey except the air is coming from on top instead of underneath.

They were getting frustrated trying to keep the balloon closed while putting it over the top so I pulled out the chip clips (from IKEA) and showed them how to put them on the balloon while they were attaching them so they didn't have to hold them closed. They liked that idea.

It wasn't long before the Lego guys made their appearance! They each have a Lego minifigure that is "them".

Have fun playing!

Love these, but the message that they're for boys misses a HUGE percentage of the world population...
