Vroom! Frightening McMean, Tormentor and I-Screamer rev up their car-crushing engines for foil painting fun! Today we’re building a monster truck racetrack out of cardboard, paper towel rolls, and tin foil. Instead of traditional racing, let’s slap on some tin foil, add neon paint, and zip-zoom around the race track! We had so much fun playing with our monster truck sensory bin, so we thought we’d bring the trucks to the paint track! Have you ever tried foil painting? It’s simple, fun, and ow-so colorful! The key to making the paint stick is dishwashing liquid! Rolling wheels, high-octane attitude and big, bold personality make monster truck painting fun!

Materials Needed:

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Cardboard
  • (2) Paper Towel Rolls
  • Neon Tempura Paint
  • Paint Containers
  • Dishwashing Liquid
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Monster Trucks

Cover a piece of large cardboard with aluminum foil. I used masking tape to adhere the corners. It’s easier if you put the tape down first, than add foil. Depending on the width of your box, you may need to add another sheet of foil. I had a box top on hand, so we used it to make it more ‘track-like.’ No box top? No worries, just be sure to fold the foil around the back of the board.

Next, hot glue or tape your tubes together, than tape to the foil. I used two ramps total.

Add a flexible piece of cardboard to the top and tape to the foil. I used a piece of packaging, but any cardboard will do. Tip: To make cardboard more flexible, tear the top layer on one side off to show the lines.

Add your second ramp following the same process as above. Here’s an example of pealing the top layer of cardboard off to make it more flexible. Plus, the texture adds to the track painting.

Add foil and you’re ready to go! No need for perfection, it’s going to be covered in paint! The tire-crushing power of monster trucks will smooth any bumps!

The tubes double as binoculars! I see you! He kept saying, “Mommy I have nock-u-lors!”

Paint Mixing:
  • Pour 1/4 cup of tempera paint into a bowl large enough to fit your truck in for dipping.
  • For each color, add 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid to neon tempera paint and mix well.
  • If you need more ‘stick,’ just add a touch more dishwashing liquid.
Let’s vroom, zoom, fly!
